Publisher's Summary:

R. I. M. Dunbar elaborates upon his widely cited hypothesis that the evolution of human language was dependent upon an increase in the group size of ancient hominids. As social groups became larger, means of maintaining bonds had to be extended. The use of vocalization as a bonding and affiliative device jump-started language. Both music and laughter may have played crucial roles in the early steps of this process. Both may have offered key social bonding devices, with physiological rewards to maintain them.
